about

Coordinated Services Manager Cubic 6 sat at the coffee shop window. The din of people wasting their chat briefly replacing the rumble of machines echoing in his head. He sits in the corner by the window to watch for incoming chatters. God how I fucking hate happy people, he thought.

The coffee is hot in the ever efficiently ineffective coffee cup that corporate plasters happy sayings on. Today's was chin-up weekends around the corner, beneath which a fucking happy face glowed yellow back at you. If you turned the cup it would wink at you, which at this point, was more interaction than he was willing to have. Alone and quiet, eyes forward he watched the line of people awaiting their ineffective cup of the day. Perhaps someone will be lucky and get a Thursday cup and suddenly feel closer to the brief escape.

Cubic 6 removes the lid from the ineffective cup and casually pulls the tiny transparent from his pocket. Inserting his index finger into the hot liquid, pretending to move it as the transparent dissolves. A quick stir and it will be good he thinks as he sits back and rests his neck touching the cup to his lips to begin his journey to emptiness.

The countdown begins 4, 3, 2, 1 as the voices and machines slide away. The world is strangely quiet, frozen yet fully motioned.

People pass the window. Some see the dim drawn face smiling out from between plastered advertisements. The look never wavers, never blinks and with controlled collision hides the world from view. Where to today, he thinks? From the counter, a heavy cockney accent can be heard speaking to his friend, fuck me mate that’s shite. There’s the trigger and the second count-down begins. A young woman passes by and appears to briefly smile. Memories of dancing and a life gone slide into view. The music interspersed with film noir dance through the coordinated services manager’s mind. Memories of late-night parties with a young woman and quiet nights laughing at some of her favourite movies from 100’s of years ago.

A favourite escape of the world today, to see what it was once like and oddly one of the reasons the government created Transparency. The blurring of our reality with the belief that what was, may again be.

The memory fades and reality reasserts itself. Time to head back to his Cubic.

about

Caeruleum Blue Ottawa, Ontario

As a young lad of 6 in 1974 my father plopped me down and said listen to this lad. It was Echoes and I never looked back. By 12 I had gobbled up Floyd, Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Oldfied, Vangelis, etc.

Now 40 years later I have returned to those lucious spaces again as life has afforded me the opportunity.

No dreams of greatness only the greatness of dreams.
